Collision Scene Analysis.

A visit to the collision scene as soon as possible after the event is vital in order to identify, record, photograph and measure any relevant marks created by the involved vehicles on the road surface.

By doing this any short term road surface evidence such as tyre marks, gouges, debris, fluid stains etc, which had been created by the involved vehicles can be properly identified, measured and recorded both photographically and on a scale plan, for later analysis.

Only by a meticulous examination of the scene and surrounding area can all the available physical evidence be gathered. These are the foundations upon which all other evidence is supported.

Scale Plan Preparation.

Scene data collected during the visit to the collision scene should be reproduced on a scale plan, together with the position of street furniture, road markings, traffic signs and lines of sight.

The pre-collision position of the witnesses, together with any reference points mentioned by them, can also be marked on the plan, which can be of assistance in supporting or otherwise what they could or could not have seen of the pre-collision actions of the vehicles.

This will be an important visual aid for use during analysis of the whole collision circumstances and during subsequent legal proceedings.

The plans are drafted using an industry standard CAD package and can be of A4 or A3 size.

We are also able to provide 2D or 3D visual aids for Court presentation purposes.

We are also able to provide locus reports, which consists of a visit to the scene to obtain relevant measurements in order to draft a plan and a series of annotated photographs, bound into an album for ease of presentation.

Vehicle Examination.

The pre collision mechanical condition of the involved vehicle is a very important factor in any collision analysis.

In order to determine the pre-collision state of the vehicle and to determine whether or not there was a contributory mechanical defect present, the vehicle should be inspected by a qualified engineer.

Peter Cuthbert is a suitably qualified and experienced mechanical engineer having some 30 years of practical experience in the examination of all types of vehicles and trailers.

We are also able to carry out vehicle defect analysis in non-accident related cases and disputes.

We have also gained extensive experience in comparative analysis of vehicle damage in suspected Insurance fraud cases or where there is an element of doubt surrounding the collision circumstances.

For instance the collision may have been contrived to make a fraudulent claim, or the vehicle damage sustained during a genuine collision may have been made more severe by later intentionally colliding with another object.

Collision Investigation.

Subsequent to the collision scene visit, preperation of a plan and the examination of the vehicle, the whole collision scenario can then be reconstructed, using a wide variety of mathematical formulae, where appropriate.

This can include for instance:

  • Vehicle speed from skid marks
  • Critical speeds around bends or road curvatures
  • Momentum calculations
  • Pedestrian walking speeds & timings
  • Pedestrian throw calculations
  • Projectile calculations
